Upcoming Webinars | June & July 2021
For the remainder of
June, plus the four (4) weeks in July, we have a series of webinars that focus
on approaches to research, literature, and research communication. The webinar
topics are applicable to early and mid-journey PhD candidates, but anyone
thinking of, or nearing completion of their journey are welcome to attend.
Wednesday 23 June 2021 | Introduction to Observational
Research
Facilitator | Dr Craig
J Selby
Observational research allows the
researcher to see what their subjects really do when confronted with various
choices or situations. As the name implies, is a way of collecting data through
observing – either directly or indirectly – but either way, the researcher has
an active involvement in the process. Observation data collection method is
classified as a participatory study, as the researcher immerses themselves in
the setting where the respondents are.

Wednesday 30 June 2021 | Mixed Methods
Research Design
Facilitators | Dr
Craig J Selby & Dr Esther Hooi
‘Mixed methods’ is a
research approach whereby researchers collect and analyse both quantitative and
qualitative data within the same study.
The key word is
‘mixed’, as an essential step in the mixed methods approach is data linkage, or
integration at an appropriate stage in the research process. It is also a
research design with philosophical assumptions as well as methods of inquiry;
its central premise being the use of quantitative and qualitative approaches in
combination provides a better understanding of research problems that either
approach alone. In this webinar we will provide an overview of mixed methods,
along with how to consider a mixed methods approach in your research planning.

Wednesday 7 July 2021 | Introduction to
Survey Research
Facilitator | Dr Craig
J Selby
We will discuss how to
construct and design effective surveys; from question structure and wording, to
context and consistency.
There are various ways to collect data
using quantitative research tools. In this webinar, we will discuss surveys,
and how to effectively design your questions; from the question wording, survey
structure, and the sequence that ensures a better understanding of data for
both the respondents and the researcher. We will advise techniques on
maintaining a consistent context through your survey.

Wednesday 14 July 2021 | Grey Literature
Facilitator | Dr Craig
J Selby
Not 50 shades, but
perhaps an academic iteration to that.
Grey literature refers to publications
outside of mainstream publishers efforts – books and journals. Such
publications can contribute to our research and our understanding of our
research area, both conceptually and possibly even for data, yet themselves
must be analysed in a more stringent way – mostly because they do not go
through a robust peer review process themselves. This webinar explores hot to
analyse, contextualise, and interpret grey literature sources, and facilitate
the use of such sources in your overall dissertation.

Wednesday 21 July 2021 | Writing Survey
Questions
Facilitator | Dr Craig
J Selby
Specific word choice
and sentence structure will enhance the quality of your surveys and your data!
This webinar delves
into the written side of surveys; ensuring your sentence structure, word
choice, use of measurement scales and devices works well to give you credible
data that you can use. Don’t make mistakes with your surveys and lose valuable
time and information; curate strong and accurate questions from square one.

Wednesday 28 July 2021 | Stakeholder
Outreach in Research
Facilitators | Dr
Craig J Selby & Associate Professor Willie Smith
Develop approaches for
connecting to community and stakeholders for research purposes.
Our
research is not just for our PhD; it has implications and value to a wider set
of stakeholders, be they community, corporate, government, or further afield.
This webinar explores stakeholder outreach and your role (as the researcher) in
communicating your research to external stakeholders, highlighting not only its
results and value, but potential contributions or spin-off’s too.

Hello! Will these sessions be recorded? I would love to attend but I am working at that time. Thank you very much for your help, Isabel.
